How to write your beauty & personal care resume
State boards set the rules for who can work on clients' hair, skin and nails, so the license line is usually what a salon or spa manager checks first. Write it out exactly: cosmetology, barbering, esthetics or nail technology, the issuing state and whether it's active. Because license qualifications vary by state, say whether you've applied in the new state if you're relocating. Students and apprentices can list their program, hours completed and expected exam date.
Below that, name the services you're trusted to perform, such as color correction, skin fades, lash extensions, chemical peels or gel sets, and link a portfolio or a social account you keep for work, with photos of your own clients. Booth rental and freelance work count as experience too: list them under your business name with dates.
Behind the chair, the useful numbers are rebooking rate, regular clients, retail sales per service and average ticket. For example: "Built a book of about 90 repeat color clients in two years and lifted retail sales 12% by giving each guest a written home-care plan."
How do I list an esthetician license on my resume?
Give the license its own line near the top: the title as your state prints it, the state and the expiration month. A license number is optional on the resume, but keep it handy for the application. Hold licenses in two states? List both. In a state with a higher tier, the title matters: Washington, for one, issues a separate master esthetician license, with a 1,200-hour combined school route. After the license line, name the treatments you're trained to perform, such as dermaplaning, peels or microcurrent, and the device brands you use.
How do I make a cosmetology resume while I'm still in school?
Give the school's clinic floor its own entry, marked as student work: the school's name, the months you worked the floor and the services you performed on guests, counted if your school tracks them, such as 40 color services. Add front-desk or retail shifts, a competition entry or a brand class you completed. Check when your state lets you test: in Washington, students may sit their exams once they're within 100 hours of finishing, so a passed written or practical exam belongs on the resume as soon as you have it. What goes on a makeup artist resume?
Sort your experience by the work you book, since bridal, editorial, theater and film each hire on different proof. For each job, give the client or production, your role (key artist, assistant or solo), the faces you did and the call times you worked to. Name the skin tones and textures you work with confidently, any airbrush or HD work, and how you sanitize brushes and products between clients. Union work counts too: members of IATSE Local 706, the Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild, can put it right under their name. Freelancers can borrow phrasing from the Freelance Makeup Artist examples.
When a stylist applies to manage a salon, which results should the resume lead with?
Your chair results stay, but they move below the work of running the salon. As a Hair Stylist, lead with your specialties and the clients who return to you. As a Beauty Salon Manager, open with the team you hire, train and schedule, the salon's service and retail totals, and how you handled inventory and vendor orders. Keep your own license on the page, especially if you still take clients. A later move to Medical Spa Manager adds a clinical side: coordinating with the medical director and nurses, consent and treatment records, and booking for laser or injectable services.
