How to write a finance resume

A finance resume needs a clear account of what you handled, not a pile of financial terms. Month-end close, forecasting, reconciliation and client work are different jobs. Start with the finance function the job description names, then pick experience that shows that work. Show what you owned, which accounts, systems or reports you worked with and how your work fed a finished close or a decision someone had to make. The Bureau of Labor Statistics sums up accountants and auditors as people who prepare and examine financial records.

A controller or finance manager may move on from a resume when:

  • Broad skills language hides the finance function you performed.
  • Figures appear without the process behind them.
  • Team results read as individual wins.

  1. Pick the finance function you are targeting

Start with the finance role you want. Accounting, financial planning and analysis, commercial banking and investment work need different evidence. Match your experience to the duties in the job description, not to the whole field. The accounting and analyst resume examples and the finance job titles closest to your target are a good place to compare.

Open the builder with the finance title that matches your last job and adapt its suggestions. Rewrite each one around the reconciliations, models or reports you handled, so you can talk it through in an interview.

  2. Describe the process or analysis you handled

Explain one process or analysis you handled, such as account reconciliation, a rolling forecast, variance reporting or managing client accounts. Note the tools, frequency and scope where useful, then say which decision or finished report it supported. The suggestions for accounting and analysis work are a quick way to start your own entries.

    Example from a month-end close:

“Cut the monthly bank reconciliation for 12 operating accounts from four days to two by building a shared exceptions tracker.”

The builder gives a reconciliation or analysis task a clear place in your work history. Describe the records, tools and checks you handled, then explain the decision or finished report your work supported.

  3. Tie results to your own work

Use numbers you can back up and are allowed to share. Separate your part from a team or company result. Before your first full-time job, an accounting internship, a volunteer tax clinic or a class valuation project can show how you work with financial data. Our advice on internships and confidential figures goes further.

A financial result needs a scope you can explain. Use the builder to connect a figure you can support with your own responsibility, or describe a finished analysis or review when a team total would overstate your part.

  4. Make experience and credentials easy to scan

Finance employers look for a clean work history and a short skills section. Keep a CPA license or CFA charter apart from exams you are still taking, and give your strongest analysis or reporting work room to explain what you did. There are templates with space for licenses and systems. Also weighing insurance or real estate? Browse those and other related fields.

As you try templates in the builder, the live preview shows whether credentials and systems are easy to find. Leave the most room for the analysis or reporting work that sets you apart.

How Rocket Resume helps

Rocket Resume helps you fix each of these before a controller reads it:

  • Name the finance job. Name the accounting, analysis, banking or other finance process you handled in that job's entry.
  • Explain each number. Adapt a suggestion to explain what you reconciled, forecast or reported and what the number measures.
  • Show your own share. Revise team achievements to show the analysis or action you handled, and say clearly when a result belongs to the whole department.

Here is a sensible order for a finance resume in the builder:

  1. Choose a template. Choose a template with room for a CPA license and systems, and compare it in the live preview.
  2. Add work experience. Add each finance role with dates and the accounts, reports or clients you handled.
  3. Select relevant skills. Choose skill suggestions for the software, analysis and controls you use.
  4. Sum up your specialty. Name your specialty, such as audit, tax or forecasting, and the kind of companies or clients you served.

Finance resume questions

Answers to what people ask most before applying for finance jobs.
  • How do I put a CPA license, or CPA exam progress, on my resume?

Once your license is issued, add CPA after your name and give it a line of its own with the issuing state and status, for example "Certified Public Accountant, Ohio, active." Until then, leave the letters off. State rules control the title: Texas, for one, bars any title or abbreviation tending to indicate you're a CPA unless you hold a valid license or qualify under a practice privilege.

Show progress instead: each exam section you've passed with its month, and whether your license application is filed. Because a rule like Texas's reaches any title that suggests CPA status, ask your state board before you write "CPA eligible."

  • Where does my NMLS ID go on a mortgage resume?

Put your NMLS ID in your resume header beside your name and phone number, written as "NMLS #" and the number, so it's the first credential a recruiter sees. Then add a Licenses line that says how you're authorized. Under the federal SAFE Act, mortgage loan originators (MLOs) are either state-licensed or federally registered, and federal registration is limited to employees of banks, credit unions and a few related institutions.

If you were federally registered at a bank or credit union, write "Federally registered MLO." If you're state-licensed, list each state license you hold. That tells a non-bank lender which state licenses you'd still need to apply for.

  • How do I list CFA exam levels if I'm not a charterholder?

Describe your progress in a sentence, not as letters after your name. CFA Institute's guidance gives "Passed Level I of the CFA Program" as its model wording and keeps "CFA Program candidate" for people registered for an upcoming exam or awaiting results. It rules out forms like "Jane Doe, CFA Level I" and expected dates such as "CFA (expected 2028)."

Put the line under Education or Certifications. If you've passed all three levels but haven't been awarded the charter, say the award depends on meeting the work-experience and membership requirements, and skip "charter pending."

  • How do I show promotions at the same bank on a resume?

Name the bank once and stack each title beneath it with its own dates and the latest on top, so a climb from Floating Bank Teller to Teller Authorizer to Senior Personal Banker reads as one career. Give each step a sign of added trust: the branches you covered as a floater, the approval limit you held as an authorizer, then the households or deposits in your book as a banker.

Credit careers stack the same way. A move from Branch Credit Manager to Regional Credit Manager and then National Credit Manager should show the portfolio, the number of branches and the team growing at each step.
