How to write a social work resume

Social work resumes need to connect your practice experience with the setting and responsibilities in the job description. Field practicums, direct services, community programs and leadership roles each show something different. Explain what you contributed and the supervision or teamwork involved. List degrees and licenses with their actual status, protect the privacy of the people you served, and don't present an agency's outcomes as your personal achievement. The NASW resume resources provide sample resumes for bachelor's and master's social workers and for a senior manager.

Child welfare, hospital and school employers get stuck on social work resumes when:

  • The practice setting and the role you want are not clear.
  • Descriptions blur supervised work, independent practice and teamwork.
  • Field practicum hours and license status are vague or overstated.

  1. Choose the relevant practice experience

Name the practice setting and the work you are applying to do, such as child welfare, hospital social work or community programs. Direct services and leadership roles need different evidence, so pick the jobs and practicum work that fit the duties and qualifications in the job description. Browse social work resume examples by setting and social work job titles to see where your experience fits.

Pick a social work job title in the builder and look through its suggestions for the setting you know, such as child welfare or a hospital unit. Keep the ones that describe work you could talk through in an interview and rewrite the rest.

  2. Explain contribution and collaboration

Explain a task you handled, such as assessment support, discharge planning, case documentation or program planning. Keep your level of responsibility honest and mention teamwork where it matters. Leave out anything that could identify the people you served. Start from the suggestions written for social work tasks and edit them to match your caseload.

From a hospital social worker's resume:

“Completed psychosocial assessments for about 15 new patients a week on a medical unit and arranged home health and transport before discharge.”

Each job in the builder's work history step has its own dates and description, so give the discharge planning, documentation or program work you did a few specific sentences. Say who you worked alongside and leave out anything that could identify a client.

  3. Label your practicum and licenses accurately

Students and new graduates can give a field practicum real space on the page; call it a practicum and name the agency. Experienced social workers can explain the practice, supervision or program duties they held. List degrees and licenses with their current status, such as a pending LMSW or your state's equivalent, instead of implying a completed credential. Find more help in the articles on social work careers.

Give your field practicum its own dates and duties in the builder. Name the agency setting and the supervision you received, then list completed degrees and licenses so an employer can tell your practicum training apart from the jobs you're licensed for.

  4. Give your practicum and jobs clear space

Education, field practicum and paid employment belong in separate sections, with licenses near the top and dates in one format throughout. Under your most relevant jobs, show the setting, your responsibility and who you worked with. Browse templates that keep education and licenses visible. If you have also worked in counseling or nonprofit programs, look at counseling, nonprofit and similar fields too.

Look for a clear progression through your social work experience in the builder preview. Education, practicum and employment should be easy to spot, with the most relevant practice or program duties given enough context to make sense.

How Rocket Resume helps

Make your setting, your share of the work and your license status plain:

  • Your setting and focus. Name the setting and whether you handled cases, community work or programs in each job.
  • Your part in the team. Edit a social work example to show what you did under supervision, on your own or with other professionals.
  • Practicum and license status. Record your field practicum as a practicum and give the current name and status of your licenses in their own section.

Build your social work resume in four passes:

  1. Choose a template. Switch templates in the preview until your practicum, degree and license all fit.
  2. Add work experience. Enter each agency job and practicum with dates and the duties you held.
  3. Select relevant skills. Choose skill suggestions for assessment, documentation and discharge planning.
  4. Write the summary. Open with your practice setting, degree and license status.

Social Work resume questions

Answers to what people ask most before applying for social work jobs.
  • How do I put babysitting on my resume?

Give it a job title, such as Babysitter or Child Care Provider, with "Self-employed" or "Private families" as the employer, plus your town and the years you did it. Then add details a parent or manager can check: how many families, the children's ages, how often you sat, and tasks like homework help, bedtime routines or school pickups.

Taken a first aid, CPR or babysitting course? List it with the provider and year. If it's your first job, put it near the top; once you have other work, keep it when it fits the role, such as a classroom aide or camp job.

  • How do I write my social work license on a resume?

A social work license goes on your resume under its full title and issuing state, such as "Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), New York," never just "licensed social worker." LMSW and LCSW are separate licenses with different scopes, so an agency needs the exact title, plus the expiry date to confirm the license is current.

  • Can caring for a family member go on my resume?

Yes. If a program paid you for that care, list it in your work history. California's In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) program says care providers may include family members, friends and neighbors, and that the person receiving care is considered the provider's employer. A California provider can list it as IHSS Provider with the county and dates, then the services and monthly hours the county authorized, and tasks such as bathing, meals or rides to appointments.

Unpaid care for a parent or child can appear as Family Caregiver with dates, which also explains a gap. Leave out the person's diagnosis.

  • What does a support worker's resume need before applying for social worker jobs?

The bridge is a degree, so list yours, or your program and expected finish date. Bureau of Labor Statistics career data show that a bachelor's in social work (BSW) is the most common requirement for entry-level nonclinical jobs, a master's program (MSW) accepts a bachelor's in almost any field, and clinical social workers need an MSW, supervised experience and a state license.

Keep your support roles in date order and give each the measures social work also uses: caseload, records kept and outcomes such as housing found. Examples along that path: Direct Support Professional, Housing Support Worker, Foster Care Worker and Social Worker.
