How to write a sales resume

This page is for people who sell to businesses or run the teams that do, from inside reps to sales executives. Wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives sell to businesses, government agencies and other organizations, and their companies usually set goals or quotas to meet. A hiring manager reads a sales resume for what you sold and against what target, as the sales resume examples show. Counter and consumer sales roles sit with retail and automotive among the other industries.

Sales resumes that get passed over usually miss in one of four ways:

  • Your bullets describe calls and meetings, not the quota you carried or how much of it you hit.
  • Numbers appear without a frame: no deal size, buyer, territory or length of the sales cycle.
  • You lead a team now, but the resume still reads like a rep's list of personal wins.
  • You sell a technical product, and the knowledge buyers rely on is buried in a skills line.

  1. Put the target and the result in one line

Sales work is measured, so a sales resume can be too. Open each bullet with your measure, such as quota attainment, new accounts, pipeline created or renewal rate, then say how you got there. A percentage reads better beside its base number, as the example resumes show.

A quota bullet for an account executive might read:

“Closed $1.4M in new annual contract value against a $1.1M quota (127%), ranking 2nd of 16 reps in the Central region”

Pick the year you beat your number by the widest margin and start with that bullet. In the builder, search inside sales representative on the work history step, then edit the nearest suggestion until it names your quota and your result.

  2. Name the product, the buyer and the sales cycle

A 140% year means more when the reader can picture the deal. Name the product, the buyer, such as a plant manager or a regional distributor, the usual contract size and how long deals took to close. Add the territory: states, a zone or named accounts. The job title pages and career advice show how each role frames it.

Your territory and buyers give a reviewer the scale behind each number. In the builder, give each sales job a separate entry and start its description with the product, the buyer and the territory you covered.

  3. Switch to team numbers once you manage people

Sales managers direct selling by assigning territories, setting goals and establishing training programs for their representatives, so a manager's bullets should show those levers: team size, the team's attainment, reps hired and ramped, and how close the forecast landed. Keep one strong line from your own selling years, and borrow wording from the phrases for sales roles.

A manager's resume is easier to write when the team's results come first. In the builder, look up sales manager when you reach work history, and choose the suggestions about coaching, forecasting and territories that fit your team.

  4. Show the product knowledge buyers rely on

When you sell switchgear, fire suppression systems or industrial equipment, buyers expect answers to specification questions. Representatives selling scientific or technical products typically need at least a bachelor’s degree, so name your degree, product lines and manufacturer training, and choose a template with room for a certifications section.

Product training and certifications help when a reviewer can find them quickly. In the builder, list each one in the Certifications section, written the way the manufacturer or issuing body names it.

How Rocket Resume helps

Rocket Resume’s builder keeps a sales record in the order a hiring manager reads it:

  • Duties instead of results. Any suggestion you add can be rewritten, so a duty line can end on your quota and result.
  • Numbers with no frame. Each job is its own entry with employer, location and dates, so territory sits beside the right company.
  • Personal wins, not team results. Search sales manager or zonal sales manager on the work history step for suggestions about leading a team.
  • Buried product knowledge. The optional Certifications section keeps product training and licenses in the exact wording you type.

These four builder steps take a sales resume from start to finish:

  1. Pick a clean template. Choose a template with room for a number in each bullet, and check the live preview as you go.
  2. Add each sales job. Add each employer with its dates, then open the description with the quota, territory and result for that role.
  3. Search your sales title. Look up inside sales representative or account manager and keep the suggested skills you use, editing each to fit.
  4. List product training. Add certifications and manufacturer training in the optional Certifications section, worded the way the issuer writes them.

  • How do you show quota attainment on a sales resume?

Put the target and the result in the same line, with the period they cover, such as 118% of a $900K annual quota. A rank adds context when you have one, such as 3rd of 14 reps. An Inside Sales Representative can add the activity behind the number, such as demos booked or opportunities created.

If your employer treats its figures as confidential, give percentages and rounded totals instead of exact revenue. Without a formal quota, use growth on your book of accounts, new accounts opened or renewal rate.

  • How do you show the move from sales rep to sales manager on a resume?

Most sales managers come up through sales jobs, so keep the rep years on the page with their best numbers, then let the management role show what changed: how many reps you led, the team's attainment and the territories or goals you set.

A Sales Manager resume reads stronger with a line on hiring and coaching, such as reps ramped to quota. A Zonal Sales Manager adds the area managers reporting to them and the zone's result against its target.

  • What should a technical or industrial sales resume show?

Show that you understand the product well enough to answer a buyer's specification questions. Name the product lines, the buyers you sold to, such as contractors, plant engineers or distributors, and any training from the manufacturers you represent.

A Technical Sales Representative can add demonstrations or site visits that led to orders. An Electrical Sales Representative can name the product categories carried and the contractor accounts grown.
