  • Lead with EPA 608 and its type; techs who service ozone-depleting refrigerant systems must hold it.

  • Plumber

    Examples

State your license level, journey or master, and the state or city that issued it.

  • If your state licenses backhoe, loader or dozer operators, list that license before your machines.

  • Worker

    Examples

Swap "worker" for the job you did most, such as concrete laborer or framing helper.

  • Civil Foreman

    Templates

Crew size and scope come first, such as earthwork, utilities or flatwork, then your largest job.

  • Detail the forms you build (walls, columns or decks) and any panel systems you've set.

How to write your construction resume

Most states require electricians to pass a test and be licensed, and construction equipment operators often need a commercial driver's license, so give the class and name the machines you run with their make and capacity.

An OSHA 10-Hour or 30-Hour card goes under training, described as a course completion card: OSHA says none of its Outreach courses is a certification, though some states and cities may require the training as a condition of employment. Back up your work with job-site numbers such as contract value, square footage, crew size, days ahead of schedule, punch-list items and hours worked without a lost-time incident. If you've moved from project to project, list the projects under each employer or union local so short stints read as steady work.

Here's how one bullet might read: "Ran a 12-person framing crew on a $6M, 48-unit apartment build, finishing framing two weeks ahead of schedule with no lost-time injuries."

  • How do I list union experience on a resume?

Name each contractor you were dispatched to as the employer, with your dates there, and add the local to each entry or in one membership line with the union, local number and year you joined.

Put your apprenticeship under training by its full program name, with the year you completed it and the hours logged. If a posting asks about union status, answer it near the top in plain words, for example "Journeyworker, card in good standing." A superintendent staffing a union job then sees the card and your track record without hunting for either.

  • What job title should a construction worker use on a resume?

Use the title that matches the work you did most and the job you want next. The Bureau of Labor Statistics files the occupation as construction laborers and helpers, and some specialize: road-crew laborers may run jackhammers or control traffic, while helpers work beside electricians or plumbers. "Concrete Laborer" or "Electrician's Helper" tells a superintendent more than "Construction Worker."

Handyman suits small repair work for homeowners; for a contractor, lead with your strongest trade. See how others title the same work: Union Laborer, Semi-Skilled Laborer, Skilled Tradesman and Electrician's Mate.

  • How do I write a construction resume if I've worked for homeowners, not companies?

Treat the self-employed years as one job: a plain business name or "Self-employed, residential carpentry," your city and the dates. Under it, describe four or five representative projects with what you built, the materials and how long each took.

Show the business side as well. Bidding jobs, tracking inventory and directing workers are part of self-employed carpentry, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and they show a contractor you can run a job. Line up two or three past clients or general contractors as references, and mention a contractor's license or insurance if you held one.

  • Apprentice, journeyworker, foreman, superintendent: what should each line of my resume prove?

Give each level its own line under the employer, with the dates you held it, so the climb is visible at a glance. In the U.S. pipe trades, the Bureau of Labor Statistics describes a 4- or 5-year apprenticeship with typically 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training a year; where a state or city licenses the trade, a licensing exam follows for journey level. Put the program and the year you finished under training.

Foreman and superintendent lines need different proof: crew size, the scopes you coordinated and how the schedule held. Examples at each stage: Apprentice Fitter, Journeyman Pipefitter, Piping Foreman, Mechanical General Foreman and Assistant Construction Superintendent.
