List each insurance license as its own line: the state, the license type and the lines of authority it covers. Agents must be licensed in the states where they work, and life and health is licensed separately from property and casualty, so that line tells a recruiter which desk you can fill.

How to write your insurance resume

Claims work differs: adjuster licensing varies by state, and in some states adjusters employed by an insurer work under the company's license, so say plainly whether you hold your own and where.

Designations show depth beyond the license. Examples include the CPCU from The Institutes for property-casualty work and the CLU from The American College of Financial Services for life insurance; agents who also sell securities can add a FINRA Series 6 or Series 7 license.

For results, agents can count policies written, premium and retention, while claims staff can show caseload, cycle time, reserve accuracy and file audit scores. For example: "Managed about 120 open auto physical damage claims at a time while cutting average cycle time from 14 to 11 days."

  • How should insurance licenses and your producer number (NPN) appear on a resume?

In a Licenses section near the top, give each state license its own line with its residency status (resident or nonresident), its lines of authority in that state's wording, and whether it's active. Then add your National Producer Number (NPN) once. The National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) describes the NPN as a nationwide ID that links a producer to licensing records across states, separate from any state license number.

That helps carriers and agencies match you to the right records when you hold licenses in several states. Still studying? Write the pre-licensing course you finished and your exam date where the license line would go.

  • How do I get hired as an insurance agent with no industry experience?

Put the license first; it's what lets you sell. In most states, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports, agents are licensed after they complete specified courses and pass state exams on insurance fundamentals and state insurance law. Name the license you hold, or the exam date you've booked.

Then pull sales proof from earlier jobs: add-on rates in retail, a call-center target you beat, or accounts you kept at a bank or gym. A summary that names the line you want to sell, such as personal auto or final expense, tells an agency where you'd fit. See examples for a Life Insurance Agent and a Property and Casualty Insurance Agent.

  • What should an appeals and grievances resume show?

Name the plan types you've worked, such as Medicare Advantage, Medicaid managed care or commercial, since each runs on its own rules and deadlines. In Medicare Advantage, a grievance is a complaint about how a plan or provider operates, while an appeal reviews an adverse decision on coverage or on what the member pays. The plan must decide a standard grievance within 30 days, unless it takes a permitted 14-day extension, and must respond to certain expedited grievances within 24 hours.

So report the two queues apart: cases closed a month, the share closed on time, and case files you prepared for outside review. Examples: Appeals and Grievances Coordinator, Grievance Appeals Specialist.
