How to write a technology resume

On a technology resume, connect each tool or language to the problem it solved and your part in it. Pick the function in the job description before choosing projects, because development, operations, support and data work call for different evidence. Personal or school projects can support an early application if you say what they were, while work experience should show how much of the system you owned. Software developers design programs around what users need, then test and maintain them so they keep working, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics software developer profile.

Engineering and IT managers tend to lose the thread when:

  • Tools appear without the problem or function they supported.
  • Designing, building and maintaining a system read as the same work.
  • Projects lack a clear setting or individual contribution.

  1. Choose the technology function

Pick the technology function you want before choosing examples. Software development, IT operations, help desk support and data work involve different responsibilities. Lead with projects or jobs that match the tasks in the job description. See software, IT and data resume examples and technology job titles to find the closest match.

Choose a job title such as developer or help desk technician in the builder, then rewrite its suggestions around the tools you used and the responsibilities you held. That keeps each skill tied to work you did.

  2. Explain the problem and your contribution

Explain a problem, your contribution and how you checked the result. Name tools where they help a hiring manager understand the work. Make clear whether you designed a solution or built, tested, supported or maintained it. Edit the suggestions for developer and IT work to match your own projects.

From a help desk technician's resume:

“Traced a recurring VPN drop for 40 remote staff to an expired certificate and wrote the fix into the support knowledge base.”

Pick one technical problem and turn it into an experience entry in the builder. Explain the task, tools and checks you performed, making clear whether you designed, built, tested or supported the solution and what you personally contributed.

  3. Give projects a clear setting

If you're new to the field, a class project or something you built on your own can stand in for job experience; say which it was. Include a link to a repository or demo when you can share it. Experienced applicants can add system scope, on-call duties or teamwork without exposing confidential details. Find more in the articles on tech careers.

Personal and course projects can show technology skills when their context is clear. Use the builder to name the setting and describe what you built or investigated, then add a project link if the work is public and suitable for an employer to review.

  4. Balance skills and experience on the page

Keep technical skills easy to find while leaving room for experience. Short project entries work well for relevant work outside your jobs. Keep links, role descriptions and dates clear so an engineering manager can follow your part in each one. Templates with room for skills and projects suit this, and if you also handle networks or phone systems, look at telecommunications and related industries.

Use the builder preview to check the balance between technical skills and experience. A hiring manager should find the function you know and the projects behind it, without a long tool list burying your contribution.

How Rocket Resume helps

Tie your tools to real problems and show what you built, fixed or ran:

  • Tools tied to a problem. State the support, development or infrastructure problem and explain what the named tool helped you do within the role.
  • What you built or maintained. Adapt a technology suggestion to say whether you designed it, built part of it or kept it running.
  • Your part in a project. Label personal, academic and workplace projects accurately, then describe your own contribution rather than assigning the whole project to yourself.

One order that works for a developer or IT resume:

  1. Choose a template. Pick a template with a skills column and room for project links, and check it in the preview.
  2. Add work experience. Add each job with dates, then describe the systems you built, supported or fixed.
  3. Select relevant skills. Pick skill suggestions for languages, tools and testing.
  4. Write the summary. State your technical focus and strongest tools in the summary.

Technology resume questions

Answers to what people ask most before applying for technology jobs.
  • How do I list projects on a tech resume?

Give each project a heading line with its name, the stack and a link to the repository or a live demo. Follow it with one or two bullets: what it does, the part you built, and a result someone could check, such as active users, a benchmark or a pull request merged upstream. On a team or class project, say which piece was yours, like the API or the test suite.

Students and career changers can put Projects above experience while it holds their strongest work. Once your jobs show more, move the section below them and keep two or three entries.

  • How should I list IT and security certifications on a resume?

Write each one as the issuer names it, with the month you earned it and, if it expires, the month it's good through. Expiry is common: under CompTIA's current rules, A+, Network+ and Security+ expire three years from the date you earn them unless you renew.

Be exact with credentials that need experience. ISC2 lets someone who passes the CISSP exam without the required five years of experience become an Associate of ISC2, with six years to earn it, so that person lists "Associate of ISC2," not CISSP. For an exam you haven't taken yet, give the month it's scheduled and label it that way.

  • How do I describe SAP or other enterprise platform projects?

Whether you're an SAP MM Functional Consultant or an SAP Basis Consultant, give each implementation its own entry under the employer or consultancy. Open it with the client's industry, the project type (a new implementation, an S/4HANA conversion, a rollout to more countries or ongoing support), the modules you owned and the go-live month. Then say which phases you worked, such as requirements, configuration, testing or hypercare after go-live.

If your contract keeps the client confidential, describe it instead, as in "a global consumer-goods manufacturer." The same layout suits a Senior Workday Consultant or a ServiceNow Administrator.

  • How should my resume change as I move up from L1 support?

List each tier under the employer with its own dates, and change what the bullets measure as you move up. As an L1 Technical Support Engineer, show ticket volume, the channels you covered and how often you solved issues without escalating. At L2 Support Engineer, shift to root causes: escalations you took from L1, recurring faults you fixed and knowledge-base articles that let L1 close them.

A Help Desk Manager reports on the team: headcount, shift coverage and service-level results. If you ran outages, a Major Incident Manager resume leads with the incidents you coordinated and how quickly service came back.
