How to write your public relations resume
Beside your contact details, link a short portfolio of releases, pitches that earned coverage, crisis statements, and speeches or op-eds you drafted (with permission). The BLS notes that some employers prefer professional certification. If you've earned the Accredited in Public Relations (APR) credential from the Universal Accreditation Board, put it after your name.
Back your bullets with communications results: earned placements and the outlets that ran them, share of voice against competitors, message pickup, audience reach, event turnout and turnaround on media requests. Political campaign jobs follow the election calendar, so list each cycle with dates, name the race level and give the scale of your work: doors knocked, volunteers trained, voter contacts logged or dollars raised.
Here's a sample results line: "Secured 18 regional and trade-press placements in six months for a credit union's new small-business program, including two local TV segments."
Put this guide to work
How do I make a PR portfolio?
Pick six to ten pieces aimed at the jobs you want. For agency jobs, lead with pitches and the coverage they earned; for in-house jobs, executive and employee writing; for campaigns, statements written on deadline. Give each piece a two-line caption with the goal, your part and the result, such as the outlets that ran the story or the turnout an event drew. A simple web page or one PDF works if the link is easy to type. Before posting client work, ask permission and remove anything confidential; the Public Relations Society of America's Code of Ethics asks members to safeguard the confidences and privacy rights of present, former and prospective clients. Label class projects as class work.
What counts as experience on an entry-level PR resume?
Give student work the weight of a job. Treat a student-run firm like agency work: PRSSA, the Public Relations Student Society of America, says its chapters operate more than 100 of them and that they work with real clients, so name the firm, your account role and the type of client. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) adds that some employers look for experience from a school newspaper, social media or blogs, or a leadership role at school or in the community, so give those entries what you published or ran. Leave accreditation for later: the board behind the Accredited in Public Relations (APR) credential recommends at least five years in public relations before pursuing it.
Canvasser to political consultant: what should each step on my resume show?
Show each cycle's step up and what it added. Canvassing proves you can work a list and talk with strangers; organizing adds recruiting and running the canvassers; a field or campaign manager role adds a plan, a budget and staff; consulting means several campaigns pay for your specialty at once. Date each step by election year, and note when a promotion came mid-cycle, since that shows a campaign trusted you quickly. Report results you can defend, such as turnout in the precincts you worked or money raised on your program, and leave out wins you had no part in. Before you write, pull together your job dates, results, education and the posting for the job you want. Fill in your contact details, work history, education and skills in that order, building each bullet from an action verb and a result. Write the summary last, even though it goes at the top, then tailor the resume to the job and proofread it before you apply. The same steps work for a first resume, with school, volunteering and part-time work counting as experience.
