How to write your retail resume

Use the numbers your store tracks, such as sales against goal, units per transaction, average sale, conversion, and loyalty or credit sign-ups; for stock roles, think inventory accuracy, shrink, freight worked per shift and resets finished on time. Store leaders should add sales volume, team size and the labor budget they managed.

Register experience deserves its own line: cash-drawer accuracy, opening and closing, and any key-holder duties. Because retail schedules can include evenings, weekends and holiday peaks, state the shifts you can cover, and label holiday jobs "Seasonal" so short dates make sense. Most retail sales workers learn on the job, but the NRF Foundation's RISE Up program offers credentials such as Customer Service and Sales, and some states license selected sales jobs, such as car sales.

For example: "Ranked first of 12 associates in loyalty sign-ups for two straight quarters by pitching the program at checkout."

  • How do I describe cashier work on a resume?

Keep your employer's title, Cashier, and let the bullets show the job's range: transactions or customers per shift, drawer accuracy and the register system you used. If you watched self-checkout lanes, say how many, since the Bureau of Labor Statistics counts that among cashier duties. Age-restricted sales earn their own line, because cashiers selling alcohol or tobacco must verify the buyer's age. For tobacco, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) tells U.S. retailers to check the photo ID of anyone under 30, so "Checked ID on tobacco and alcohol sales with no failed compliance checks" is a strong bullet if it's true. See Gas Station Cashier and Tobacco Cashier examples.

  • What skills should I list on a retail resume?

Lead with product knowledge, since it tells a manager what you can help customers with from your first shift. The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that retail workers may get specialized training depending on the product they sell, so name yours: tinting paint, cutting keys, fitting shoes, explaining mattress firmness or grading diamonds. Then list the systems you used, such as the point-of-sale register, a handheld inventory scanner, the scheduling app or an online-order pickup queue. Languages you speak with customers deserve a line. Soft skills like "team player" add little on their own, so show them in a bullet about a holiday rush or an upset customer you won back.

  • How do I write a retail resume with no work experience?

For a cashier job, you don't need to arrive trained: the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) says cashiers typically need no formal education and are trained on the job. So lead with school, the hours you can work and the basics a manager builds on. BLS adds that cashiers need basic math to count money and make change, so a fundraiser where you ran the cash box, or a club budget you tracked, is direct evidence. Customer-facing volunteering, babysitting and team sports show you turn up and deal well with people. Name weekend and holiday availability if you have it, and keep the page to one. See Grocery Store Stocker and Thrift Store Clerk examples.

  • Can stocking or register work lead to store management?

It can. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says retail sales workers, whose duties can include the register and restocking, may advance to supervisory or managerial positions, often gaining responsibility and a choice of departments with seniority, and that some employers prefer a bachelor's degree for managers. On paper, show the climb inside one employer entry: the store name once, then your titles with their dates. Let the bullets widen as the job did, from stocking accuracy and truck unloads, to opening, closing and training new hires as a lead, to sales targets, payroll hours and audits as a manager. Grocery Store Stocker, Lead Budtender, Assistant Store Manager and Liquor Store Manager examples cover each stage.
