How to write your creative resume
For designers and many other artists, employers rely on portfolios when deciding whom to hire, so place your portfolio or reel link in the header beside your email and aim it at the job. A matchmove opening calls for tracking breakdowns, a picture-book publisher wants finished spreads, and a brand team looks for layouts in its own category.
For each role or project, name the production or client, the part of the pipeline you owned (concept, layout, roto, lighting, retouching, color) and the software. Match tool names to the posting: O*NET's profile of special effects artists and animators names programs such as Adobe After Effects and Unity, along with work done under tight deadlines. Count the shots, frames, assets, shoots or campaigns you delivered, plus turnaround time and review rounds.
Freelancers can gather short gigs under one dated "Freelance" entry with a few named clients instead of a dozen brief listings. Exams such as Adobe Certified Professional, delivered by Certiport, can back up software skills early on, alongside your samples rather than in place of them. For example: "Delivered 42 roto shots for an episodic series over five weeks, each approved within two review rounds."
Is a portfolio the same as a resume?
No. The portfolio shows what you can make; the resume explains who it was for, your role, the dates and the tools, which a finished image can't. Keep the two in step: each featured project should appear on the resume under the same title, client and year, and your stated role should match the credit on the piece. When a project was a team effort, say which part was yours, such as the layout, the retouching or the type system, so a reviewer neither credits you with all of it nor doubts the rest. In a Designer resume, a short case-study link beside each project ties the two together.
What is a demo reel, and how does it work with a VFX resume?
A demo reel is a short edited video of your strongest shots, and for roto, matchmove and other visual effects (VFX) roles it does much of the work a portfolio does for designers. Put its link beside your contact details and open the reel with your strongest shot, since a reviewer may stop early. Add a shot breakdown, as a PDF or a web page, listing each shot's show, what you did on it (roto, paint, tracking, layout) and the software. Match those show titles to your resume, and leave out shots a non-disclosure agreement keeps private. For skill and tool wording, compare the Roto Artist and MatchMove Artist examples.
What is an artist resume?
It's the exhibition record that galleries, residencies and grant panels ask for, and it reads differently from a job resume. Instead of duties, it lists events in reverse date order under headings such as solo and group exhibitions, commissions, residencies, awards, collections holding your work, and press. Education, including workshops or study with a named maker, gets its own heading. For a paid studio job, such as Ceramic Studio Assistant, flip the order: lead with studio skills like throwing, glaze mixing, kiln loading and teaching classes, then keep a short exhibitions section.
What is a creative resume, and when should I use one?
It's a resume whose layout, type or color shows design judgment. It suits roles where that judgment is the job, such as brand design or illustration, and matters less where a reel or portfolio carries the case. Even a designed version should keep its words as real text, not a flattened image, so a recruiter can search it and copy your email, and it should read in a plain order: name, contact and portfolio link, then experience. Online application forms often ask for plain text, so keep a simple version ready. For a 3D Visualizer, the renders persuade, and a quiet page lets them.
