Veterinary resume guide
A veterinary team divides work by credential, so the one after your name tells a clinic which tasks you can take on; list it near the top.

How to write your veterinary resume
Veterinarians list the DVM or VMD, each state license and a pass on the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination, which US licensing jurisdictions require; the BLS notes that most states add their own licensing exam. Technicians usually pass the Veterinary Technician National Exam and then use the title their state grants, such as CVT, RVT, LVT or LVMT, since title laws vary by state. Graduates of a NAVTA-approved assisting program can sit for the Approved Veterinary Assistant exam, and groomers may list the National Certified Master Groomer credential.
Show your caseload in terms a practice manager recognizes: appointments per day, species handled, surgeries assisted, anesthesia monitored and lab work run. Locum vets can add the states they're licensed in and the practice types covered, while groomers and walkers can count dogs per day and rebooking rates. Students can cite clinical rotations and shelter hours. Sample bullet: "Monitored anesthesia for six to eight spays and neuters a day across two surgery tables."
Put this guide to work
How should I organize a resume for vet school applications?
Organize it the way the vet school application sorts your time. The applicant guide for VMCAS, the Veterinary Medical College Application Service run by the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC), separates veterinary experience supervised by a veterinarian from animal experience with no vet involved, research, and jobs outside animal care, and it asks you not to count the same hours twice. Give each category its own heading, and give each entry a supervisor, dates and average hours per week. Family pets won't fill the animal section: AAVMC's pre-vet FAQ leaves them out. Still in college? Put "pre-veterinary" under your degree with the expected graduation date. See Veterinary Student examples.
What experience should I put on a vet assistant resume if I haven't worked in a clinic?
Show that you can handle animals and follow instructions to the letter. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) says most veterinary assistants have a high school diploma and learn on the job, and that experience with animals may help, so lead with any you have: shelter volunteering, kennel shifts, farm chores or grooming, with the species and how many animals you looked after. Then match what you've done to duties BLS lists for the job, such as feeding and bathing animals, disinfecting kennels and exam rooms, and restraining animals during exams. A front desk, retail or food-service job still shows calm client service. See Veterinarian Assistant examples.
How do I show the steps from vet student to intern to locum veterinarian?
Let each stage carry its own evidence. As a student, list your final-year clinical rotations, since BLS says students typically spend the last year of the four-year program on rotations in a veterinary hospital. After graduation, an internship entry names the hospital and its rotations, plus the match year if you placed through VIRMP, the matching program for internships and residencies. For relief or locum work, open with your licenses: BLS notes that few states accept licenses from other states, so each one you hold widens where a clinic can book you. List contracts newest first, with clinic type and length. See Veterinary Student, Veterinary Intern and Locum Tenens Veterinarian examples.
How do I write a dog walker or pet sitter resume?
If you work for yourself or take bookings through an app, present it as a small business: a business name or "Independent Pet Sitter," the area you serve and your dates. BLS notes that many states require self-employed animal care workers to have a business license, so list yours if you hold one, along with any insurance. Then put numbers on the work BLS describes for sitters, feeding, walking and playing with pets at the owner's home: regular clients, dogs per walk, overnight stays and pets on medication. The Red Cross's 35-minute online Cat & Dog First Aid course ends with a digital certificate you can list. See Professional Dog Walker and Pet Sitter Dog Walker examples.

Career advice

Updated Oct 17, 2026
Most resumes need five main sections: contact details, a summary or objective, work experience, skills and education. Add optional sections such as certifications or awards when they show you fit the job, and if you're short on work experience, let school, part-time jobs, volunteering and projects fill the page. Leave off references, a photo, your date of birth, salary history and anything else that doesn't help an employer judge your work.

Resume mistakes that trigger automatic rejection in 2026, from typos in contact details and ATS-breaking layouts to listing duties instead of results, keyword stuffing, oversharing, and stale GPAs.
