Example or template?

Resume example or template: which free one do I need?

They solve different problems. Here's when to open each, which comes first and how to turn a free sample into yours.

What's the difference between a resume example and a template?

An example gives you the words; a template gives you the look. A resume example is a finished resume for one job, with its summary, experience and skills already written. A template is the empty layout you fill in: the fonts, spacing, headings and where each section sits on the page. Pages offering free sample resume templates often mix the two, so decide which problem you're solving first.

When should I use a free resume example?

Use an example when you know your work but not how to put it into words. It shows which skills to list for that job, what a summary for it sounds like and how much detail goes under each role. The nanny sample resume, for instance, turns everyday childcare into skills and work history examples a parent can scan quickly. Notice, too, that most work history bullet points open with an action verb, then say what was done and for whom.

Look at the summary examples on each sample page as well. Most are a single sentence that names the job and a strength or two, often with years of experience, which shows how short yours can be. Write yours after everything else, once you know what your resume should lead with.

When should I start with a free template?

Start with a template when your content is ready but the layout is slowing you down. A good one is easy to scan, with clear headings, steady spacing and contact details right at the top. Styles run from traditional to modern and creative: a traditional one keeps the focus on your experience, while a creative one can suit a design-minded field. In Rocket Resume you pick the template inside the builder, every one is free to use, and you can switch to another later without retyping a word. Free resume templates shows them side by side.

Which should I open first?

Open whichever one answers what's holding you up right now:

  • Stuck on what to write? Start with the free example for your job.
  • Know what to say but not how to lay it out? Pick a template first.
  • Starting from a blank page? Read the example first, then pick a template and write.

Changing careers? Read the sample for the job you're aiming at, not your present one, and look for duties that carry over.

How to use a free example and a template together

Keep both open side by side and work through them in this order:

  1. Open your job's sample in one tab and the builder in another.
  2. Choose a design, then work section by section, using the example as a checklist for duties, skills and results.
  3. Type each job title you've held and pick the suggestions that describe your real work.
  4. Swap every number, employer and tool for your own, and reword each line in your own voice.

A clean template makes your resume quick to read; specific bullet points make it convincing. Test a few designs against your example; your words carry over each time you switch.

How to make a free sample resume sound like you

Replace the sample's general duties with details only you can give. Name the setting you worked in, who or what you looked after and how often. A nursing assistant might say how many residents they cared for on a shift; a plumber, which kinds of jobs filled most of their week. Then read each line aloud. If it could sit on anyone's resume, add one more true detail until it couldn't. For help with the other sections, see our guide on how to write a resume.

Questions about free resume examples

Answers on CNA resumes, students, finding your job and more.
  • Are there free resume examples for students?

Yes. The college student sample suits anyone still in school. Applying for a first job? Open the sample for the role you want, such as customer service, and hold on to any line that fits what you did in class, clubs or part-time work.

  • Is there a free example for my exact job?

Search the full job title list using the title you'd say at work. No exact match? A sample from the same workplace, such as a hotel or a warehouse, still shows the duties and skills to cover. Asked for a CV? See our free CV examples.

  • Can I copy a free resume example word for word?

Use it as a model instead: keep its structure and make every bullet point about your own job. Bullet points about your real work are easier to back up in an interview, and our resume examples page shows a worked rewrite.

  • Can I use a resume example for a job I haven't done yet?

Yes. Read the free resume example for the job you're aiming at, mark the duties and skills that match work you've already done, and lead your resume with those.

  • Where can I find free resume templates?

Our free resume templates page shows every design side by side, each one free to fill in. You can also pick a template inside the builder and switch to another later without retyping.
